Company pays $30,216 in bottle law settlement
Garden Island Disposal Inc. has paid more than $30,000 in a settlement over alleged violations of the state's HI-5¢ can and bottle redemption law.
The state Department of Health said the company used an unapproved method of calculating the redemption value of plastic beverage bottles it handled from Aug. 1, 2005, to March 23, 2006.
Under the settlement with the state, Garden Island Disposal has paid a cash penalty of $15,216 and $15,000 to fund an environmental project by Zero Waste Kaua'i, a nonprofit group working to maximize waste diversion from the Kaua'i landfill.
