LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — Erin Hamlin of the United States has won the women's race at the Luge World Championships.

The 22-year-old from tiny Remsen, N.Y., had the fastest runs in both heats at Mount Van Hoevenberg and finished with a time of 1 minute, 28.098 seconds. Natalie Geisenberger of Germany was second in 1:28.285, and Natalia Yakushenko of Ukraine took the bronze in 1:28.334.

Austria's Angelika Neuner, who won bronze on her home track at Igls in 1997, was the last non-German to win a medal at worlds.

World Cup leader and defending women's champion Tatjana Hufner of Germany finished sixth, nearly three-quarters of a second behind Hamlin.
