Falling oil costs lower Hawaii electricity prices

Utilities across the state will charge less for electricity this month as a result of a decline in oil prices.
Hawaiian Electric Co. said the typical 600 kilowatt-hour residential bill will decline to $123.58 from $138.98 in January.
The effective rate for electricity in Honolulu is dropping to 19.2 cents from the 21.7 cents per kilowatt-hour that it charged in January.

Electricity rates spiked in Hawai'i last year because most of it is produced with generators using fuel oil or diesel oil. On O'ahu, the peak occurred in September, when the average residential customer paid $202.13 for their monthly bill.
