A crew working on a sewer replacement project on Vineyard Boulevard this morning ruptured a Hawaiian Electric Co. pipe, sending an oil-like subtance shooting into the air.
The sewer project is between Aala and Liliha streets.
The break was reported at about 9:30 a.m.
Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig said the substance was neither flammable nor toxic, and that no evacuation of area residents was necessary.
Seelig said he was told by HECO that the substance was used to help cool high-voltage underground transmission lines.
