Smoke from fireworks, as seen here in Kalihi last New Year's Eve, could linger long after the last blast, the National Weather Service says.

The National Weather Service says a weak front advancing across the Islands is expected to bring clouds and showers to Kauai and Oahu later today and into the night.

But don’t expect much relief from fireworks-generated smoke.
“Showers, if any, will be limited as synoptic conditions remain unfavorable,” the weather service says in its area forecast discussion. “Winds will remain more on the lighter side even with the passage of the weak front. Hence locally created smoke from the (New Year’s) celebration will probably linger across the Islands overnight.
“A weak high pressure behind this front is expected to bring northerly trade winds over the area later Friday. Thus there may be a chance for the smoke as well as lingering vog to clear the Islands by the New Year.”
Highs today will be 79 to 84 degrees. Winds will be variable to 15 mph.
Meanwhile, a northwest swell is expected to generate advisory-level surf along north- and west-facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai and Maui and west-facing shores on the Big Island.
The advisory is in effect until 6 tonight.
Surf along north-facing shores will be 12 to 18 feet today before slowly subsiding.
Surf along west-facing shores will be 8 to 12 feet.
