Hoping to show more of a leadership role, Kamehameha junior Caprice Dydasco took charge and recorded what is believed to be her first hat trick in high school.

Dydasco scored twice in the first three minutes of the second half and added another just before the end of the game to lift visiting Kamehameha to a 3-0 win over 'Iolani in a spirited Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls soccer game yesterday to complete the first round of league action.

"At halftime coach Bud (Kamehameha coach Michele Nagamine) talked to me, that this is where it starts: leadership and taking charge," said Dydasco, who leads the Warriors with six goals and verbally committed to UCLA. "I thought about it at halftime and told myself that I had to be the leader and show how to work hard and it just came. It was team work."

Each team, Division I and II, plays each other twice in the regular season. Punahou (5-0-1) was idle yesterday.

"She's got such talent, and she's such a nice girl and she's a wonderful friend," Nagamine said.

"You want to please so much and you want to do so well, it psyches you out a little bit. We were a little bit shell-shocked in the first half."

Kamehameha improved to 5-1-0. 'Iolani fell to 4-1-1.

Dydasco scored on the Warriors' first play off the second-half kickoff on a through pass from senior midfielder Courtney-Rae Botelho that pulled 'Iolani goalkeeper Lauren Brown out of the goal for an open shot by Dydasco. The play took 15 seconds from the starting whistle.

"Just unorganized," 'Iolani coach Kristin Masunaga said. "I don't think our defense was ready. So they just watched the ball go through."

Dydasco scored again around two minutes later after collecting a pass on the top of the 6-yard box from junior midfielder/forward Gabriella Yates, driving to the endline, cutting back to her left and shooting into the right side of the goal.

Dydasco completed the hat trick a few minutes before the end of the game when she challenged four 'Iolani defenders with a run that swallowed up 'Iolani's defensive half, drawing them to the left before shooting a low ball into the net.

"That last goal? Insanity," Nagamine said.

The Raiders opened the game with several opportunities created by throw-ins by senior forward Elissa Minamishin or crosses from the right side. For Kamehameha, its offense consisted mostly of several penetrating runs by Dydasco —who hit the post on one of her shots.

"She's a good player, but at the same time we didn't want to adjust everything for her. We didn't execute our game plan," Masunaga said. "We do better with the ball at our feet."
