HPD setting up checkpoints to stem impaired driving

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Police Department plans to conduct checkpoints during holidays and on special-event weeks over the next three months.

According to an HPD news release, the checkpoints will be set up at unannounced times and locations on (but not limited to) Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Super Bowl Sunday, Valentine's Day and President's Day.

As of yesterday, 54 people have been killed in traffic incdents on O'ahu, up from 46 in all of last year. Speed and/or impaired driving were factors in 30 of this year's fatalities.

HPD is participating in the national "52/12" sobriety check program, with impaired-driver checkpoints conducted each week from October 2009 to September 2010.
