UH women back home

The Rainbow Wahine basketball team finally returns to the Stan Sheriff Center, hosting Kent State today and tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the Waikīkī Beach Marriott Showdown.

Hawai'i (4-7) last played at home Dec. 3. Since that win over San Francisco, the Rainbow Wahine won at Brigham Young-Hawai'i and stunned Kansas State last week in Las Vegas.

The Golden Flashes (6-3) are led by Jamilah Humes, a 5-foot-8 junior guard who is averaging 11.2 points per game. Taisja Jones, a 6-foot junior forward, is averaging 10.8 points off the bench and Yoshica Spears, a 5-10 junior forward, is averaging 8.4 points and 8.8 rebounds.

Keisha Kanekoa, a 5-6 junior guard, leads Hawai'i with 9.1 points per game. Since becoming eligible for the season during the San Francisco game, junior transfer Julita Bungaite, a 6-2 forward/center, is averaging 7.5 points and 5.8 rebounds.

KFVE will broadcast tomorrow's game live. Both games will be live on ESPN 1420.

NO. 1 CONNECTICUT 78, NO. 12 FLORIDA STATE 59

Tina Charles scored 16 of her 24 points in the second half as visiting Connecticut (11-0) beat Florida State (11-2) for its 50th straight win. Maya Moore added 16 points for the Huskies, who have won all 50 games by at least 10 points.

Jacinta Monroe led Florida State with 14 points.

NO. 6 OHIO STATE 76, ILLINOIS 47

Jantel Lavender scored 31 points and Samantha Prahalis added 14 to lead Ohio State (14-1, 2-0 Big Ten) past host Illinois (8-3, 0-1).

Lacey Simpson led the Illini with 11.

NO. 8 DUKE 117, NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL 28

Joy Cheek scored 16 points to help host Duke (10-2) defeat North Carolina Central (1-10) in the biggest rout in Blue Devils history. Duke led 65-9 at the half.

Danielle DeBerry and J'Mia Pollock scored six points apiece for North Carolina Central, which had more turnovers (45) than field-goal attempts (41).

NO. 9 GEORGIA 59, CLEMSON 47

Angel Robinson had 12 points and 14 rebounds as Georgia improved to 12-0 for the second time in three seasons with a victory over host Clemson (9-5).

Lele Hardy, Clemson's leading scorer coming in, was just 3 of 12 from the field with 13 points.

NO. 10 TEXAS A&M 89, PRAIRIE VIEW 48

Danielle Adams had 19 points and eight rebounds as host Texas A&M (10-1) beat Prairie View (3-6).

Latara Darrett and Gaati Werema scored 11 points apiece for Prairie View.

WISCONSIN 62, NO. 16 MICHIGAN STATE 54

Alyssa Karel scored 21 points as host Wisconsin (11-2, 1-1 Big Ten) upset Michigan State (9-4, 0-2).

Allysa DeHaan, Michigan State's leading scorer, was held to nine points.

NO. 17 TEXAS 94, CENTRAL MICHIGAN 83

Brittainey Raven had 26 points and 10 rebounds to help Texas (8-3) beat Central Michigan (3-8) in the opening round of the Miami Wyndham Holiday Tournament at Coral Gables, Fla.

Jalisa Olive scored 22 points for Central Michigan.

NO. 18 VANDERBILT 96, EAST TENNESSEE STATE 83

Freshman Tiffany Clarke had career highs of 27 points and 11 rebounds to lead host Vanderbilt (11-1) over East Tennessee State (4-5).

TaRonda Wiles scored 30 points for ETSU.

NO. 19 ARIZONA STATE 74, FURMAN 37

Danielle Orsillo scored 16 points as Arizona State (8-3) ended its two-game skid with a win over visiting Furman (4-10).

Lee Stephens scored 11 to lead Furman.

NO. 22 WISCONSIN-GREEN BAY 75, SOUTHERN ILLINOIS 64

Kayla Tetschlag had career highs of 25 points and 14 rebounds as Wisconsin-Green Bay (11-0) held off visiting Southern Illinois (1-9).

Christine Presswood had 22 points for Southern Illinois.

NO. 23 VIRGINIA 69, SAMFORD 60

Monica Wright had 28 points, nine rebounds and six steals as Virginia (8-3) beat Samford (8-5) in the opening round of the Cavalier Classic at Charlottesville, Va.

Emily London scored 18 points for Samford.

NO. 24 GEORGIA TECH 63, HAMPTON 54

Brigitte Ardossi scored 24 points as Georgia Tech (11-2) beat Hampton (3-8) in the 25th annual FIU Sun and Fun Classic in Miami.

Quanneisha Perry and Bernadette Fortune both had 11 points for Hampton.

NO. 9 NORTH CAROLINA 81, RUTGERS 67

Freshman Dexter Strickland scored a season-high 18 points as host North Carolina (10-3) beat Rutgers (9-3).

Mike Rosario scored 22 points for Rutgers, which came in with a six-game winning streak — the program's longest in eight years.

NO. 18 TEMPLE 63, BOWLING GREEN 39

Ryan Brooks scored 19 points and Ramone Moore 17 as host Temple (10-2) beat Bowling Green (5-5).

Dee Brown led Bowling Green with 10 points.

FREDETTE HITS 49 FOR BYU RECORD

Jimmer Fredette scored a school-record 49 points as Brigham Young (13-1) routed host Arizona (6-6), 99-69. Fredette topped the BYU record of 47 points, set by Bob Skousen against UCLA in 1961.

WAC MEN

NEVADA 78, PORTLAND 69

Luke Babbitt scored 22 points, Brandon Fields 17 and Armon Johnson 16 as host Nevada (8-5) held off Portland (7-5).

Robin Smeulders scored 22 points to lead Portland.

SAN JOSE STATE 78, UC IRVINE 68

Adrian Oliver scored 29 points, hitting 4 of 6 from 3-point range, and grabbed seven rebounds, leading host San Jose State (7-5) past UC Irvine (6-6).

Eric Wise led Irvine with a career-high 31 points.

Center Chris Oakes, the Spartans' leading rebounder this season, was reinstated by the NCAA yesterday after missing three games while an eligibility issue involving his transfer in 2007 from Pepperdine was resolved. Oakes, who entered the game averaging 11.4 rebounds and 10.3 points, came off the bench to score six points and grab four rebounds.

FRESNO STATE 73, COLORADO STATE 50

Greg Smith scored 18 points and Sylvester Seay added 17 to power host Fresno State (7-7) past cold-shooting Colorado State (8-5).

Dorian Green scored 12 points for Colorado State, which trailed by 23 at halftime after shooting 17.9 percent from the field.

NEW MEXICO STATE 95, PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 76

Wendell McKines had 22 points, 13 rebounds and six assists, lifting host New Mexico State (7-6) over Prairie View A&M (5-6).

Michael Griffin scored 19 points to lead Prairie View A&M.
