Advertiser Staff

Thirty-five homeless-assistance projects in Hawai'i are receiving $9.7 million in grants from the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department.

The money is part of nearly $1.4 billion in grants nationwide the department said.

The largest single grant in Hawai'i was just less than $2 million to Honolulu's New Beginnings project.

Other recipients include the state Public Housing Authority, Steadfast Housing Development Corp. and Legal Aid Society of Hawai'i.

Meanwhile, the government of Guam received $782,000 to help fund six projects.

Overall, the grants will assist 6,445 existing programs around the country, up from $1.2 billion to fund 5,825 ongoing projects last year.
