A 60-year-old man who was shot by Big Island police and killed during a standoff Wednesday has been identified as Daniel Heidt of Kehena.

Heidt was shot after he allegedly fired a gun and threatened police officers after barricading himself in his home for nearly 10 hours. Police said they found a machete and .22 caliber revolver in the home following the shooting.

The incident began about 2:50 a.m. Wednesday when officers responded to a report of shots being fired inside a house in the Kehena Beach Estates in lower Puna. As officers approached the home, they reported hearing additional shots, police said.

Shortly after 1 p.m., police said, the man left the house, brandishing a machete. As officers approached Heidt to arrest him, he pulled out a firearm, and during a struggle for control of the weapon, shots were fired, including one from Heidt's gun, police said.

Heidt was wounded during the scuffle and died a short while later. An autopsy is set for tomorrow to determine the cause of death.

The case remained under investigation yesterday.

Heidt has no adult criminal history in Hawai'i, according to the state Criminal Justice Data Center.
