Saipan company looking to dismantle mothballed U.S. ships

Associated Press

SAIPAN, Northern Mariana Islands — The Senate of the Northern Mariana Islands is considering a resolution that expresses support for a company’s plan to dispose of decommissioned U.S. Navy ships.

The resolution says Worldwide Salvage Saipan’s investment in the project would contribute to the recovery of the U.S. commonwealth’s ailing economy.
The company wants to bring mothballed military ships from the U.S. mainland to Saipan. The ships would be dismantled, with salvageable parts recycled.
Juan Tenorio, a former chairman of an environmental group, says he’s concerned about potential contamination.
Worldwide Salvage Saipan is in discussions to lease 2,341 square yards of commercial area at the Port of Saipan.
The Northern Mariana Islands are located 3,800 miles southwest of Hawaii.
