A 13-year-old boy was shot in the arm in what police said was an apparent random shooting Thursday night in Liliha.
The boy, a Village Park resident, was taken to The Queen’s Medical Center in stable condition. No arrests have been made.
The incident occurred at about 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Vineyard Boulevard and Liliha Street. The boy was a backseat passenger in a Ford Explorer with his family when the shooting occurred, police said.
Police said the Ford had turned right from Nuuanu Avenue to Vineyard when it came to a stop at the intersection. When the light turned green, the passengers in the Ford heard a “pop” and saw a white Toyota turning left on Liliha in the makai direction.
The boy suffered a wound to his arm and cuts to his face from the shattered windshield, according to his uncle, who was called to the scene. In addition to the boy, his parents and two teenage sisters also were in the vehicle, but they were not injured, the uncle said.
The boy had just finished volleyball practice and the family was on its way home when the shooting occurred, he said. He said no one in the Ford knew what provoked the shooting, although his sister believed it was possible that they were driving too slowly and that angered the occupants in the Toyota.
Police said witnesses reported seeing the white Toyota tailgating the Ford prior to the shooting.
