Homeward Bound 5K Walk/ Race to Help Homeless is set for Sunday morning in Manoa Valley District Park.
The event is organized by two Punahou School sophomores, Tama Fukuyama and Maya Grossmann, in an effort to combine their love of cross country and track with their drive to make Christmas a bit more pleasant for the homeless families at the Institute of Human Services (IHS).
The entry fee for the race is $15 through today. All of the proceeds will go to benefit the Institute for Human Services, a not-for-profit homeless shelter that provides the homeless with the basic human needs.
“This is not a class project or homework assignment. Running is a major part of our lives, and what better way to give back to the community than to raise money through running,” Fukuyama said in a news release.
Maya Grossmann said in the release that more runners are needed to ensure success.
“We are behind in our numbers because it’s such a busy time for everyone shopping for Christmas, but homeless families deserve at least a few hours of our time, “ She added, “We made the entrance fees affordable to allow everyone to be able to help the homeless and also make it affordable for families to run or walk.”
