$1M donation for Shriners in Honolulu will go toward hospital expansion
Shriners Hospital for Children in Honolulu will get a $1 million donation today from the Marsland Foundation, the hospital announced.
The donation will go toward a $73 million capital improvement project of the Shriners hospital on Punahou Street.
Shriners will get the money tonight at a check presentation at the Plaza Club.
With the donation, the hospital has raised $11.3 million from the community for the hospital.
It still needs about $2.7 million in community donations.
Shriners has already committed $59 million to the work. Construction at the hospital started in August 2007, and is now in the second of three phases of work. The hospital is expected to be completed by summer 2010.
In August, the hospital finished work on its medical wing, which now has two operating rooms, 24 inpatient beds, 13 exam rooms and recreation, physical therapy and radiology rooms.
Once completed, the hospital will boast about 150,000 square feet of floor space — about 40 percent more space than the old hospital. Officials say that will allow the facility to meet a growing need for services, especially among kids from the Neighbor Islands.
