Midway through the second half of the Punahou and 'Iolani girls soccer game last Friday, Buffanblu forward Lahaina Zoller began hopping around awkwardly, with her shoe at a strange angle.
Somehow, during a tackle, the junior's shoe broke and the cleats ended up on the top of her shoe instead of the bottom. It didn't stop Zoller, as she tried to continue playing briefly before calling for a substitution to change her shoes.
"Running was kind of slippery," Zoller said after the game.
It was about all that slowed her down that day, as Zoller scored both the Buffanblu goals in a 2-2 tie to help the defending state champions to a 2-0-1 Interscholastic League of Honolulu record. Zoller and Allyson Holtz share the team lead with five goals apiece, tops in the ILH.
Zoller borrowed "good friend" Holtz's extra pair of cleats and returned to the game.
She scored in the first half, in the seventh and 18th minutes, off assists from Briana Afoa and Karli Look, respectively.
Both goals were similar, with Zoller using her track speed (she also competes in sprints for Punahou's track team) to chase down balls that got around the 'Iolani defense.
"They were pushing up really high, so it was just one touch around them and it was straight to goal," Zoller said. "That was definitely how I got around."
Zoller, stronger with her right foot, scored both on shots with her left foot.
"Our coaches are always challenging us to use our left feet in practice, so it's a good thing that they push us to practice or it wouldn't have happened in the game," she said.
