The Konawaena girls basketball team had a solid first half yesterday against Southridge of Beaverton, Ore.
The Wildcats had a 25-19 lead and looked comfortable.
Perhaps a little too comfortable.
Dominique Johnson went 3 of 3 from 3-point range over the first half of the third period as Southridge took control en route to a 59-54 victory over Konawaena in the 'Iolani Girls Prep Classic.
"We came out really flat. We were comfortable with the lead, I guess," said Konawaena coach Bobbie Awa. "I don't know, that's what it looked like to me."
All of Johnson's 3-pointers came from the left wing. The second trey gave the Skyhawks their first lead at 27-26 with 5:58 left in the third.
"She did a good job of knocking down some 3s," said Southridge coach Michael Meek. "She got into the flow for us offensively. She had a really nice third quarter for us."
Southridge, ranked No. 24 in the USA Today Girls Hoops Super 25, made 7 of 9 field-goal attempts in the third to take a 41-35 lead.
The Skyhawks stretched the advantage to 52-38 after a pair of free throws by Aubrey Ashenfelter with 3:14 remaining.
"I thought in the second half we did a little bit better job executing our offense. Being a little more composed," Meek said. "In games like that both teams are going to make runs at different times."
Konawaena, the defending state Division I champion, made it respectable at the end by converting off numerous turnovers.
Southridge will play Long Beach Poly (Calif.) tonight at 6:30. Konawaena will play Mid-Pacific today at 3:30 p.m.
Southridge's Johnson, who went scoreless in the first half, finished with a team-high 13 points. Allison Greene added 12 and Ashenfelter had 11.
"I think that's one of the things that makes us a strong team," Meek said. "Night in, night out we have good balance."
Lia Galdeira scored 19 points to lead Konawaena, and Anuhea Wall and Dawnyelle Awa each added 14.
The Wildcats ended the first half with a 10-4 run to take the 25-19 lead. Wall had six points and Galdeira four during the surge.
"Our team was doing good," Galdeira said. "We were taking good shots, but toward the end we just started giving them the ball and we didn't have that much time left."
Galdeira made only four field goals, but was able to draw fouls on drives to the basket.
"Our offense wasn't working so we had to isolate her a little bit," Awa said. "I thought she did a pretty good job trying to attack the basket."
Southridge had a big size advantage with six players 6 feet or taller.
The Skyhawks controlled the boards and were able to score on back-door cuts and high-lows. They finished 17 of 32 from the field.
"We had to front them and box out, the main two things, and we let them have too many inside baskets," Galdeira said.
CLOVIS WEST (FRESNO, CALIF.) 78, KAHUKU 36
Janae Coffee scored 23 points and Brianna Orlich added 14 for Clovis West, which led 44-10 at halftime. Fia Tailele-Latu scored eight points for Kahuku.
LONG BEACH (CALIF.) POLY 76, MID-PACIFIC 58
Ashley Wilson scored 18 points and Sheila Boykin 16 to lead Long Beach Poly, which is ranked No. 16 in the ESPN Rise Fab 50. Jenna Savusa scored 10 points and Jordan Kealoha added nine for Mid-Pacific.
ST. MICHAEL (N.Y.) 51, 'IOLANI 32
Allysia Rohlehr scored nine points and St. Michael Academy, the defending New York state champion that is ranked No. 4 in the ESPN Rise Fab 50, broke open the game by outscoring 'Iolani 17-2 in the third quarter. Lahela Usui scored 10 points and Kaitlyn Shikada added nine, on three 3-pointers, for the host Raiders.
