Hawaiçi County solid waste officials have responded to complaints about shortened transfer station hours by revising the schedule so more people can dump their rubbish en route to work.

Starting next week, more than half of the 21 regional refuse sites will to back to a 6:30 a.m. opening time, albeit as infrequently as one day a week.
Only the main facilities in Hilo, Waimea and Kealakehe now accept trash at 6:30 a.m. under a new cost-cutting schedule that started Dec. 1.
“In response to many residents’ concerns about the change in hours, however, 11 transfer stations will be opening at 6:30 a.m. again on certain days for the convenience of early morning commuters beginning Dec. 15,” Mike Dworsky, Solid Waste Division chief, said in a statement announcing the latest schedule change.
Those include the Keaçau station each weekday, the Honokaça facility on Wednesdays, and the Volcano trash site every Thursday.
The Waiohinu transfer station will remain closed until 7 a.m. daily. Rubbish won’t be accepted at five others — Honomu, Kalapana, Pähala, Pähoa and Puakö — until at least 8 a.m.
