Lauren Minkel was a true freshman — just months out of high school — when her Long Beach State women's volleyball team advanced to the second round of the 2008 NCAA Division I Volleyball Tournament, an experience she will draw from come Friday.

Minkel, a 5-foot-9 sophomore from Honolulu and starting libero for the Big West Conference champions, was a backup last year when the 49ers lost at national power Stanford in the round of 32.

"That was really exciting," said Minkel, who had 12 digs against the Cardinal. "Going to the NCAA Tournament in my freshman year and playing at Stanford, at such a high level, that was pretty neat."

LBSU (22-8) will play another California powerhouse in UCLA (23-8) Friday at the storied Pauley Pavilion in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

"We played UCLA already, but I think that doesn't matter because the stakes are different now. They're going to come hard and we're going to have to come hard, too," said Minkel, a 2008 'Iolani graduate.

LBSU swept UCLA on Sept. 19 as part of a tournament hosted by Cal State Fullerton. The 49ers went 11-4 in the Big West to set-up a winner-take-all showdown with UC Irvine two weeks ago.

"It went five sets and it was a really exciting match," Minkel said. "We have a long tradition and the Big West championship on the line. Our team really wanted it."

Minkel had a match-high 27 digs to help the 49ers to their second consecutive league title.

Last season, Minkel played in every set of each match and averaged 1.9 digs per set.

"It was a good way to start my freshman year and work my way into the lineup," she said. "Last year, I just tried to help my team out in whatever way I could, but this year I've had to step up my game and there's been much more responsibility."

Minkel is flourishing, averaging 4.32 digs per set — second best in the Big West,

"Our libero was a senior last year and I knew that I had a chance to start this season," Minkel said. "(LBSU head coach Brian Gimmillaro) told me to fight for it, to work hard and train and that he knew I could do it."

Minkel accepted Gimmillaro's challenge.

"I trained really hard, I wanted that spot so badly," she said. "I wanted to make my team win, I want to be on the floor when we're winning, because all that matters is winning. Last year I came in not really expecting to play, but willing to work hard and this year I feel like I've earned my job and now it's just time to play."

The winner of Friday's LBSU-UCLA match will play the Georgia Tech-Baylor winner in a second-round match Saturday.
