Former University of Hawai'i football coach Bob Wagner was released from a Honolulu hospital Thursday, two days after suffering a mild heart attack.

Wagner, 62, was flown from Hilo, where he is the athletic director at Kamehameha Schools-Hawai'i, to Honolulu Tuesday night after experiencing chest pains. He said a stent was implanted in his artery.

Wagner was UH head coach from 1987 through 1995 after being an assistant at the school for a decade. He was 58-48-3 as head coach and led the Warriors to their first two NCAA postseason bowls, the Aloha Bowl in 1989 and Holiday Bowl in 1992. The '92 team went 11-2 and gave the school its first Western Athletic Conference title in football. The Holiday Bowl victory over Illinois gave UH its first Top 20 finish in the rankings.

Wagner said he had "not felt well" for a couple days and the condition worsened while working out Tuesday.

U.S. BOYS TOP IRAN

Three players from Honolulu helped the United States boys youth national team upset defending champion Iran 25-20, 13-25, 25-22, 25-23 yesterday in the first day of pool play at the FIVB Boys Youth (19-under) World Championship in Jesolo, Italy.

Opposite Joshua Taylor (Punahou), who played the final two sets, scored nine points on eight kills and one ace. Setter Micah Christenson (Kamehameha) tallied five points on one kill, three blocks and one ace, and had eight digs. Outside hitter Taylor Crabb (Punahou) scored one point on an ace.

BYUH, UHH WIN

Ane Vea had 18 kills and Tanza Buroker added 11 to lead Brigham Young-Hawai'i (1-0) to a 23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-17 victory over Montana State-Billings (1-1) in the Hawai'i Invitational women's volleyball tournament last night at Cannon Activities Center in La'ie.

In another tournament match, Josimara Pinheiro and Fabiane Seben each had 11 kills to lead Hawai'i-Hilo (2-0) to a 25-17, 25-20, 25-11 win over Cal State East Bay at McCabe Gym. UH-Hilo is 2-0.
