A 60-year-old male visitor from Poland drowned at Larsen’s Beach yesterday morning.
The man and his son were snorkeling in the reef when they were pulled out by a riptide just before noon, county officials said.
The son swam to shore to get a rescue tube for his father, but he became caught in the rip current.
Lifeguard Pono Pananganan responded to the scene on a personal watercraft from the Kealia lifeguard tower and brought the son to safety. The father, who apparently was pulled further out, was not found during the initial search, county officials said.
Navy personnel who were flying in the area in a helicopter spotted the father and directed Pananganan to him, county officials said. Pananganan then brought the man to shore.
Hanalei firefighters performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the man until medics arrived.
The man was taken to Wilcox Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
