Advertiser staff

The Hawaii Writers Conference has launched a “Voices of Hawaii” program to explore the art of cultural storytelling at its conference in Honolulu, Sept. 4-7.
“Voices of Hawaii” includes three panel discussions that address cultural storytelling, including music, poetry and the spoken word, as well as the relationship these art forms have to Hawaiian and Pacific Island cultures. The program is supported by the Creative Industries office of the State of Hawaii’s Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.
Live performances by Hawaiian cultural icons are part of the “Voices of Hawaii” program.
On Friday, September 4 at 9 a.m., three-time Na Hoku Hanohano Award-winner Kaumakaiwa Kanakaole will perform a triple chant with members of his renowned hula family, including his mother and grandmother.
Poet Kealoha will perform a slam poetry offering, which will be followed by a musical interlude with slack key guitarist Makana.
All three artists will offer “Voices of Hawaii” workshops on Saturday, Sept. 5.
