CFB: Corp returns to USC’s practice, but answers to QB question remain

LOS ANGELES — Aaron Corp returned to practice Tuesday, but USC coach Pete Carroll continued to take a wait-and-see stance when it comes to naming a starting quarterback.
That decision could come after the Trojans conduct a mock game at the Coliseum on Saturday, one week before their opener against San Jose State.
“He’ll get a chance all the way to Saturday to show where he sits,” Carroll said of Corp. “There’s no deadline. It’s a very important day, though.
“There’s a lot going on here. Just to get him out here where he can look like he can do something is one thing. Now we need to know, and he needs to know, so he can perform well. Just making it back isn’t enough. You’ve got to make it back and be right and be ready.”
Corp (Orange Lutheran High) said he was happy with his first full practice since suffering a cracked fibula Aug. 10. He even ended it with a quarterback sneak.
Corp wore a specially designed brace on his left knee. He moved well on dropbacks but did not have any opportunities to get outside the pocket and run.
Asked if he was going full speed, Corp said: “About as full speed as I could be. I can do everything right now that playing quarterback at USC (requires) me to do. So I feel good, and it’s only going to get better.”
Meanwhile, Corp’s competitor, freshman Matt Barkley, threw a pair of interceptions. One came on a new play the offense hadn’t practiced before, the other on a screen pass that defensive end Everson Griffen leaped for and snatched out of the air.
Does Barkley (Mater Dei) feel a greater sense of urgency with Corp back in the mix?
“Not really,” Barkley said, “but at the same time, him out here does kind of challenge me a little more, makes me try to play harder. I just don’t feel more pressure because he’s out here.”
CONGDON TO KICK
Carroll named senior Jordan Congdon the starting kicker over junior Joe Houston, saying Congdon “separated” from Houston during fall camp.
Congdon will handle field goals and extra points. He kicked for Nebraska before transferring to USC in 2007.
“I got a great opportunity to play at Nebraska, and coming out here and sitting out was rough,” Congdon said. “But the hard work has paid off, and Coach saw something and thought I deserved it.”
Carroll said JC transfer Jacob Harfman will handle kickoffs. The punting competition between Harfman and junior Billy O’Malley remains open, although Carroll praised Harfman for dropping a punt at the 1-yard line during Saturday’s scrimmage.
