'Iolani sophomore Lorens Chan shot into the lead in yesterday's first round of the Oahu Country Club Invitational, with a 2-under-par 69. He is one shot ahead of Jonathan Ota and Phil Anamizu.

Chan birdied four of his last six holes. Ota was 3-under heading into the final hole, but took double bogey. Anamizu is playing in the Senior Flight, which ends play today.

Leaders tee off today at 8:44 a.m., with the low 30 and ties advancing to tomorrow's final round.

ASING BEST ON DAY 1

Keanu Asing of 'Ewa Beach received the top scores on the opening day of the Sponsor Me Hawai'i men's surfing contest yesterday.

The first day of the two-day event was run in 2- to 4-foot waves at Ala Moana Bowls.

Asing's two-wave score of 16.5 in the second round was the best heat of the day. He received scores of 8.5 (out of 10) and 8.0 for completing a series of precise carves on each wave.

"There wasn't too many waves, but when they come, they're fun," he said. "You just have to wait and be ready to catch waves."

Asing also scored a near-perfect 9.25 in his first round victory. The first round and most of the second round were completed yesterday.

Asing is 16 and one of the youngest competitors in the event. He is a standout competitor in the amateur ranks, but this is his first entry in a World Qualifying Series professional contest.

Other standouts yesterday included Kaipo Jaquias and his son Kaimana, Daniel Jones, Roy Powers, Dustin Cuizon and Charlie Carroll.

The final day of the event is expected to run today.

Boxing: Eight Hawai'i boxers will be featured on the undercard of Brian Viloria's world title defense next Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in the Blaisdell Center Arena. The bouts with all-Hawai'i matchups: Justin Mercado vs. Richard Barnard; Toby Misech vs. Mike Balasi; Ku'ulei Kupihea vs. Shalae Padilla; Isaac Arasato vs. Donald Gonzalez. All of those bouts are scheduled for four rounds. Waipahu's Viloria will defend his IBF light flyweight world championship against Mexico's Jesus Iribe in the main event. There will also be three undercard bouts featuring boxers from Mexico and the Philippines. All bouts for the card were approved yesterday by the Hawai'i State Boxing Commission.

Tennis: More than 500 tennis players are expected to take part in the USTA League Hawai'i Pacific Section Championships, today to Sunday at the Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park Tennis Complex in Waipahu. The top 35 teams from the state qualified for the championships. The teams, which represent various clubs, parks, recreational departments and organizations, have finished at the top of their local leagues and are now vying for a chance to represent the section at the USTA League National Championships.
