Hawaiian performers to teach hula in Times Square today to mark statehood

NEW YORK — There will be a whole lot of shakin’ goin’ on in Times Square as Hawaiian performers teach visitors and residents how to hula to celebrate Hawaii’s 50 years as a U.S. state.
Organizers say dancers dressed in traditional costumes are also expected to hand out lei to the crowd. The festivities are expected to start on Friday at noon.
The birthplace of President Obama became America’s 50th state on Aug. 21, 1959.
