A-Rod ousted from Cincinnati Masters

Advertiser News Services

Andy Roddick threw his racket at the ground in a flash of anger, unable to accept what was happening. Only two weeks away from the U.S. Open, the highest-ranked American was melting down.

Fellow American Sam Querrey matched him shot-for-shot and made the biggest ones during a pair of tiebreakers last night, setting up a 7-6 (11), 7-6 (3) victory at the Cincinnati Masters in Mason, Ohio that left Roddick sapped and stunned.

"Just a bad night," Roddick said.

The top four seeds — Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic — won their opening matches in straight sets earlier in the day.

NO. 1 SAFINA OUSTED

Dinara Safina is out of the Rogers Cup.

The No. 1-ranked Russian fell 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 to Aravane Rezai of France in a second-round match yesterday at the $2 million WTA Tour event in Toronto.

Safina's loss comes one day after No. 3 seed Venus Williams was upset by Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko.

Second-seeded Serena Williams cruised into the third round with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova.

KAI'S TEAM IN FINAL

Defender Keeley Dowling scored her first goal of the season in the 31st minute, lifting Sky Blue FC to a 1-0 victory over Saint Louis Athletica last night in the Super Semifinal at Fenton, Mo. to advance to Saturday's WPS Championship.

The Los Angeles Sol, the WPS regular season champion, will host the fourth-seeded Sky Blue FC, which is based in New Jersey.

Olympic gold medalist Natasha Kai, a Kahuku High and University of Hawai'i alum, came in as a substitute in the 46th minute for Sky Blue.

BOLT CRUISES INTO FINAL

Usain Bolt won the 200-meter semifinals with ease and swagger yesterday, looking sharp for a possible assault on a second world record at the world championships in Berlin.

Jamaica didn't have to wait until Bolt's final today for another reggae celebration. Brigitte Foster-Hylton followed some Bolt-like clowning before the race with a clean run to win the 100 hurdles title.

Bolt thrived in the 80-degree heat, running hard on the curve before closing things down just past the halfway mark and cruised past the line in 20.08 seconds.

In the decathlon, Oleksiy Kasyanov of Ukraine led after five events. Yunior Diaz of Cuba had a fast 400-meter race, the last event of the day, to squeeze past American Trey Hardee into second place.
