Clay Marzo of Maui won the Quiksilver Pro Puerto Escondido men's surfing contest yesterday.

The final day of the four-day event was completed in inconsistent 1- to 3-foot waves at Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico.

Marzo, 19, dominated the four-man final with a two-wave score of 17.5. Runner-up Junior Faria of Brazil finished with a two-wave score of 11.5.

"I was a little worried because it was a little mixed up out there," Marzo said. "I got that first score and was able to relax enough to get the other one."

Marzo received a score of 8.25 (out of 10) for his opening wave, then secured the win with a near-perfect 9.25 with around 10 minutes remaining in the 30-minute final.

"I saw this section coming and knew I needed to do something big," he said of his 9.25 wave. "I did a little tack and luckily I did a big throw-tail and came out fins first and was able to spin it around."

Marzo received $7,000 for the victory.

The contest was part of surfing's World Qualifying Series, and offered points toward qualification for the 2010 ASP World Tour.

Marzo was recently featured on ESPN for his battle with Asperger Syndrome, which is a form of autism.

THREE BOUTS ADDED TO VILORIA CARD

Three 10-round matches have been added to the Aug. 29 card featuring Brian Viloria's defense of his IBF light flyweight (108 pounds) boxing title.

Viloria, who was raised in Waipahu, will face Mexico's Jesus "Azul" Iribe at the Blaisdell Center Arena. It will be the first time in 33 years that Honolulu will host a world championship boxing match.

Viloria, who will be fighting in Hawai'i for the first time since 2003, has a professional record of 25-2 with 15 knockouts. Iribe is 15-5-5 with nine knockouts.

Added to the card yesterday were bouts that match Dennis Laurente against Zaid Zavaleta, A.J. Banal against Jose Angel Beranza, and Alfonso Gomez against Sergio Rios. Promoters plan to announce four more undercard bouts.
