P.J. Minaya tied a career high by throwing seven touchdown passes to lead Pac-Five over Kaimuki, 48-19, yesterday in the opener of the Father Bray Classic nonleague high-school football game at Aloha Stadium.

Minaya was 25 of 41 for 370 yards. Four of his TDs were to Darin Kamealoha, who led with eight catches for 143 yards for the Wolf Pack (1-0).

Despite the disparate margin, the Bulldogs (0-1) played well for a team down to 25 available players of their 50 because of academic probation. Kaimuki nearly pulled out of the contest for fear of not having enough players, first-year Bulldogs coach Clint Onigama said. But five players were brought up from the junior varsity (but only four managed to play because one got injured); Onigama said because it is a nonleague game, those players may return to the JV next week, when the Bulldogs expect to be fully staffed.

"I'm proud of the way our boys played," Onigama said. "They stepped up. We played a tough first half. We made adjustments in second half. We pulled up some boys from the JV who contributed.

"We knew coming into this, we'd be short-handed. We knew fatigue would be a factor."

"We played good as a team," said senior Bulldogs receiver Chris Fiamate, one of a number of players who played offense and defense.

The Wolf Pack scored on their first five series to answer three Kaimuki TDs in that span. An interception by Bulldogs sophomore Nick Motellang at the Kaimuki 33 stopped a sixth consecutive scoring drive. But Pac-Five did score on its next series with no time left on the clock to end the half when Minaya hit Kamealoha on a 15-yard TD pass to make it 41-19.

Despite fatigue, the Bulldogs managed to keep the Wolf Pack off the board in the third quarter, but Pac-Five scored early in the fourth when Kamealoha caught a tipped pass in the end zone to complete a 35-yard pass play from Minaya that made it 48-19.

The Bulldog also were hampered by penalties, including four personal fouls among their 13 infractions.

Onigama said he tried to avoid canceling the game by bringing up players from the JV.

"We wanted to honor our contract," said Onigama, an 'Iolani alumnus. "So we pulled up some guys. We came in with five linemen and they played a hell of a game."

Kaimuki QB Eddie Char passed for 154 yards and rushed for 55, including a 1-yard TD run. Fiamate led Kaimuki receivers with 99 yards on seven receptions.
