MLB: Kasten: Nationals offered No. 1 pick Strasburg record deal

By HOWARD FENDRICH
AP Sports Writer

WASHINGTON — Washington Nationals president Stan Kasten says the team made No. 1 overall draft pick Stephen Strasburg a record-breaking contract offer.

Kasten also says in an interview with The Associated Press on Saturday there is a “very real possibility” Strasburg might not sign with the Nationals.
The Nationals have until midnight Monday to sign Strasburg, a right-handed pitcher from San Diego State whose fastball has been clocked at 102 mph.
According to Kasten, the Nationals offered Strasburg more than the record $10.5 million Mark Prior got from the Cubs after the 2001 draft.
Kasten says Strasburg’s agent, Scott Boras, is pushing for a new method of determining what drafted players are worth.
