Hawaii's Adric, Werner earn spearfishing honors

    Hawai'i competitors Hanalei Adric and Kimi Werner received All-America honors at the USA Spearfishing National Championships last week.

    More than 60 spearfishers from around the country participated in the contest at Malibu, Calif.

    Adric was one of five men named to the All-America team. Werner was one of four women on the team.

    Adric placed fourth overall with 12 fish at a total of 36.68 pounds. Another Hawai'i competitor, Lance Otsubo, placed eighth with 11 fish at 31.32 pounds.

    Dennis Haussler of California won the overall championship with 14 fish at 48.8 pounds.

    Werner placed third in the women's division with seven fish at 12.3 pounds. She won the women's division in 2008.

    Each competitor had seven hours to spearfish in the same area off Leo Carrillo State Beach. volleyball

    PUNAHOU'S CASSIDAY CO-MVP AT TOURNAMENT

    Punahou senior Henry Cassiday was named co-Most Valuable Player in his division at the USA Volleyball High Performance Championships in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

    Cassiday was a member of the USA Youth White team that finished second in the boys international youth division.

    Mililani graduate Reid Pangelinan of the third-place Aloha Region team was chosen as Best Server and 'Iolani senior Scott Sakaida of the fourth-place USA Youth Red team,was named Best Digger at the five-day tournament that finished July 26.

    In the boys national youth division, Aloha Region finished as the silver champion.

    Aloha Region was the flight 1 champion and finished 13th in the girls national select division and was 14th in the girls national youth division.
