MEXICO CITY — River Plate forward Henry Gimenez was attacked by a spectator during a Copa Sudamericana match at Bolivian side Blooming on Tuesday, forcing the game to be called off with more than 20 minutes left.

Blooming trailed 1-0 to Uruguayan club River when the spectator burst onto the pitch and seemed to hit Gimenez on the back.
Gimenez didn’t appear to be seriously injured during the incident at the Ramon Aguilera stadium in Santa Cruz de la Sierra.
Peruvian referee Victor Carrillo immediately decided to end the match. The crowd reacted by throwing objects onto the pitch, apparently hitting a photographer.
The match was the first leg of the preliminary round of the Copa Sudamericana, South America’s No. 2 club tournament, after the Copa Libertadores.
Blooming was due to visit Uruguay for the second leg on August 27. South American football’s governing body CONMEBOL must now decide whether that match will go played.
