Firefighters returning today to battle blaze on hillside
Firefighters yesterday continued to battle a stubborn, five- to seven-acre brush fire in a remote hillside in Kahana Valley that had been burning since Saturday.
No structures were threatened but some native koa trees and indigenous plants were in the path of the fire, which is located on state land, said Ryan Peralta, a protection forester with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.
Firefighters believe the blaze was started by campers, Peralta said.
The fire was 75 percent contained last night and DLNR firefighters hoped that overnight rains would extinguish it, Peralta said.
