State prepares for Felicia at harbors, airports, highways
HONOLULU — The state Department of Transportation is preparing for the possible effects of Tropical Storm Felicia on Hawai`i's commercial harbors, state airports and highways statewide. Weather forecasters predict possible high winds, large surf and heavy rain when the storm nears the Big Island and Maui this afternoon and O`ahu later tonight.
The Harbors Division is in contact with commercial harbor tenants and users, providing storm status updates and recommended preparations. Harbor relocation and safe haven plans for docked and arriving vessels are also being prepared. Starting as early as last Thursday, personnel have been clearing drainage culverts and securing loose objects around harbor piers and facilities. Tools, equipment and materials that may be needed for emergency response or recovery have also been readied for use.
Emergency preparations are also under way at state airports to maintain airport operations and minimize travel delays. A total of eight backup generators are ready for use at the Honolulu International Airport in the event of a power failure. Backup power is also ready at all major neighbor island airports.
Highways Division heavy equipment has been staged at various baseyards around the islands to provide a strategic response to storm damage on our highway systems. Crews have cleared road drainage systems to prevent flooding and are readying response equipment such as floodlights, generators and chainsaws.
