Jennifer Song of Ann Arbor, Mich., defeated Honolulu's Stephanie Kono, 2 and 1, yesterday in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis.

Song will meet Tiffany Lua of Rowland Heights, Calif., in today's semifinals; Alexis Thompson of Coral Springs, Fla., will face Jennifer Johnson of La Quinta, Calif., in the other.

Kono, a Punahou alum now at UCLA, was 1 up through eight holes before Song won three consecutive holes to take a 2 up lead through 11 holes. The golfers halved the next four holes before Kono sank a birdie to win the par-5 No. 16 to close Song's lead to 1 up.

On the par-3 17th, Kono missed her par putt, while Song made hers for the victory.

PEREZ INCREASES LEAD AT ARMY INVITATIONAL

Ryan Perez shot a 1-over-par 73 to increase his lead to four strokes yesterday after the second round of the Army Invitational.

Perez, who led by three shots after a 66 in the first round, was at 5-under-par 139 heading into today's final round at Leilehua Golf Course.

Frank Marcus shot a 74 and was in second at 143. Sean Maekawa (72) and Matthew Ma (74) were tied for third at 144. Spencer Shishido (71) was fifth at 145.

CORPUZ THIRD AT U.S. KIDS CHAMPIONSHIP

Waipahu's Allisen Corpuz shot a 72 yesterday and is in third place among the 11-year-old girls after the second round of the U.S. Kids Championship, at Pinehurst, N.C.

Corpuz is at 146, seven shots off the lead going into today's final round.

In the 7-under age group, Honolulu's Millburn Ho is tied for 16th, 17 shots back, after a 42—83 (nine holes).

Among the boys, Honolulu's Nicolas Tanaka (40—77) is tied for 21st in the 6-under age division, 10 shots off the lead. Donny Hopoi of 'Aiea shares 29th among the 12-year-olds, 13 off the lead, after a 77—151.

In the 10-year-old boys division, Wailuku's Nathaniel Idica is tied for 31st (77—154) and Honolulu's Trevor Arashiro is tied for 49th (78—157). The leader is at 140.

Honolulu's Kyle Suppa (77—152, T36) and Sian Rogers (80—158, T60) are in the boys 11's with the leader at 135.

BASEBALL

HILO SENIORS GO TO 3-0 AT REGIONAL

Taylor Goo batted 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, and four pitchers combined on a seven-hitter as Hilo beat Sitka, Alaska, 7-1, in the Little League Seniors (ages 15-16) West Regional yesterday at Ontario, Calif.

Ridge Hoopii-Haslam scored twice and picked up the victory. Jonathan Chow also scored twice for Hilo.

Hoopii-Haslam, Connor Yoshioka, Jordan Jinbo and Brendan Owings pitched for Hilo.

Hilo (3-0) plays today against Fremont, Calif., at 1 p.m. (Hawai'i time).

CENTRAL MAUI LOSES MAJORS OPENER, 7-4

Central Maui allowed six runs in the top of the third inning and lost to Glendale, Ariz., 7-4, in the Little League Majors (ages 11-12) West Regional yesterday at San Bernardino, Calif.

Glendale led 7-0 before Central Maui scored one in the fifth and three in the sixth.

Keanu Chang drove in two runs for Central Maui, which will play Chula Vista, Calif., tomorrow at 5 p.m. (Hawai'i time).

HILO JUNIORS LOSE FIRST OF REGIONAL

Hilo suffered its first loss of the Little League Juniors (ages 13-14) West Regional, falling to unbeaten Fremont, Calif., 7-2, yesterday at Aliso Viejo, Calif.

Fremont is 4-0 and Hilo is 3-1 heading into today's final day of pool play. The top two teams from both pools advance to the semifinals.

Hilo will play Henderson, Nev., today at 9:30 a.m. (Hawai'i time).

KAILUA STOPS UTAH IN AMERICAN LEGION

Kailua scored six runs in the top of the first inning en route to a 10-6 victory over Murray, Utah, at the American Legion (19-under) Baseball Western Regional yesterday at Fairfield, Calif.

Kailua (1-1) had six hits in the first, including a two-run double by Patrick Wolfe.

Kailua built a 10-1 lead before Murray closed it with two runs each in the sixth and seventh, and a single run in the eighth.

Wolfe, Jared Iha and Alika Ramseyer-Ho each paired hits for Kailua.

Kailua plays San Bernardino, Calif., today in an elimination game.

SURFING

TEAM HAWAI'I THIRD AT WORLD GAMES

Team Hawai'i is in third place entering the final day of competition in the Billabong ISA World Surfing Games at Costa Rica.

The seventh day of the eight-day contest was completed yesterday in 1- to 3-foot waves at Playa Hermosa.

Two Hawai'i surfers advanced to today's semifinals. Hank Gaskell of Maui is still in contention in the men's open division; Kekoa Uemura of Honolulu advanced in the longboard division.

Four Hawai'i surfers were eliminated yesterday: Joel Centeio in open men, Nage Melamed and Alessa Quizon in open women, and Bonga Perkins in longboarding.

The United States leads the team standings, followed by France, then Hawai'i.

Because of its storied history in the sport, Hawai'i is recognized as its own region for the contest.

The contest started with more than 180 surfers from around the world, including several top-ranked professionals from the ASP World Tour.

MURPHY'S PIGSKIN PIGOUT ON AUG. 20

The 14th annual Murphy's Pigskin Pigout, a fundraiser for University of Hawai'i football, will be held at Murphy's Bar & Grill (2 Merchant St.) on Aug. 20, starting at 5:30 p.m.

Tickets are available at Murphy's Bar & Grill or by calling 754-1502. The cost is $100 and includes pupus, drinks and entertainment.

There will be live and silent auctions, featuring football memorabilia, trips and other items. One item is a trip to San Diego with tickets to the San Diego Chargers-Washington Redskins game.

UH head coach Greg McMackin and his staff will attend.

The money raised will go to the Ben Yee Summer School Scholarship Program for UH football. Through the Pigskin Pigout, Don Murphy has helped raise more than $1.5 million.
