St. Augustine to observe anniversary with lu'au

    St. Augustine Catholic Church in Waikiki will kick off celebration of its 155th anniversary with a lu'au, Hawaiian music and hula from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Waikiki Community Center.

    The first St. Augustine Church was built along Kalakaua Avenue, mostly of coconut fronds and pieces of timber that had washed up on the beach. The second St. Augustine's was also built of mostly lumber from a shipwreck off Diamond Head.

    Several other structures were used before the present iconic church building was erected in 1962.

    PRESENTATION IN KAILUA FOCUSES ON FORGIVENESS

    Scientific research on forgiveness — as well as the spiritual law of forgiving our enemies — will be the focus of a presentation by Makana Risser Chai at the 9 a.m. service tomorrow at Windward Unity Church in Kailua.

    Her address is titled, "Have Mercy — Living a Life of Grace Through Forgiveness."

    CANCER SURVIVOR TO GIVE READINGS AT ST. CLEMENT

    A performance of readings by breast cancer survivor Joyce Parry-Moore — billed as "humorous, faith-filled, poignant, hopeful, reflective and comforting" — is scheduled for 4 p.m. tomorrow in the St. Clement Episcopal Church parish hall, 1515 Wilder Ave., in Makiki.

    CONFERENCE WILL FEATURE N.M. ARCHBISHOP LIAISON

    The Rev. Daniel Balizan, archbishop liaison to the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, N.M., is the featured speaker at Hawai'i's 31st annual Charismatic Conference.

    The event is scheduled from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 15, and 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 16, at St. John Apostle and Evangelist Church, Mililani.

    Admission is $25 if purchased before Monday, or $35 at the door.

    BLOCK PARTY AUG. 22 AT MILILANI PRESBYTERIAN

    Mililani Presbyterian Church will stage its ninth annual Block Party, with food, entertainment and a free youth concert from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. (youth concert, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.) Aug. 22 at the church, fronting Kipapa Park.

    Planned is free food, children's games and entertainment, a "jumping castle" and "palm tree climb," clowns, balloon sculptures, a magician and more.
