State waters not affected by Eleele sewage spill
'ELE‘ELE – County officials announced that state waters were not affected by the sewage spill that occurred Thursday night at 'Ele'ele Shopping Center.
An investigation by county and state health officials conducted yesterday morning indicated that sewage flowed out of the shopping center storm drain and over the cliff behind the shopping center.
Caution signs are posted near the outfall, but the area is inaccessible to the public.
McDonald’s Restaurant and the parking lot between McDonald’s and Big Save Market were affected by Thursday night’s spill.
The county’s sewer maintenance crew responded to the incident and completed its cleanup of the sewage spill at around 1 a.m. yesterday morning.
Officials estimate that approximately 10,000 gallons of sewage spilled Thursday night.
The cause of the spill was a blockage of a sewer line in the area.
