'ELE‘ELE – County officials announced that state waters were not affected by the sewage spill that occurred last night at 'Ele'ele Shopping Center.

An investigation by county and state health officials conducted this morning indicated that sewage flowed out of the shopping center storm drain and over the cliff behind the shopping center.

Caution signs are posted near the outfall, but the area is inaccessible to the public.

McDonald’s Restaurant and the parking lot between McDonald’s and Big Save Market were affected by last night’s spill.

The county’s sewer maintenance crew responded to the incident and completed its cleanup of the sewage spill at around 1 this morning.

Officials estimate that approximately 10,000 gallons of sewage spilled last night.

The cause of the spill was a blockage of a sewer line in the area.
