Did you know that every Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., you can go fishing at Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden in Kane'ohe? It's an easy 20-minute hike to the garden's reservoir, where you can enjoy some quiet family time as you participate in the catch-and-release program. You can bring your own fishing gear or borrow a bamboo pole there, but you will need to bring your own bait. The Ho'omaluhia staff recommends white bread (no live bait is allowed) on barbless hooks. Also a good idea — plenty of insect repellent and good walking shoes.
It's free to get into the Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden and to participate in the weekly family fishing day. When you've had your fill of fishing, stroll through the 400-acre garden, where you'll see plant collections from many tropical regions. Spread a picnic blanket, watch the antics of the resident ducks, and relax into the weekend. For more information, call 233-7323.
