Local filmmaker Jeff Katts and others in Honolulu are presenting a Soul Saviour Film Festival on Sept. 23 at the Consolidated Ward Theatres.
The Soul Saviour Film Festival will showcase original short films, music videos, experimental videos, and short video segments based on Katts’ on-going, supernatural drama series, “Soul Saviour.”
For the past five years, Katts’ project has been showcased on the local entertainment circuit. “Soul Saviour” tells the story of everyday people are chosen by God to save human souls. Though the subject matter deals with different aspects of religion, Katts said the project is a work of fiction and serves as an ongoing, local “soap opera.”
There have been two movies, two stage plays, and a couple of film shorts made based on the theme.
This year, at least 10 different short films by local filmmakers were inspired by the world of “Soul Saviour.”   These filmmakers include:
Aaron Yamasato, award–winning local director of “Blood of the Samurai: The Movie” and “Blood of the Samurai: The Series.”
Tony Silva, one half of the local comedy group Da Braddahs.
A short film was also made in reaction to the death of local resident Janel Tupuola, who was murdered in Kailua on Jan. 16, 2008. The short film, “Reach Out,” deals with domestic violence.
Miss Hawaii 2004 Olena Rubin Heu and Miss Hawaii 2007 Ashley Layfeld have roles in the film projects.
Local artists will showcase their artwork as part of the festival, and dancers in the Honolulu Dance Company will perform outside the Consolidated Theater on Sept. 23.
Showings will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10.
