Fast-fading Lana passes Hawaii, but new storm brewing off California
Advertiser Staff
Say aloha to tropical depression Lana.
At 5 a.m. this morning, the center of the weakening storm was about 580 miles southwest of Honolulu.
The Central Pacific Hurricane Center said Lana is expected to become a remnant low later this morning.
But even as Lana dissipates, the weather service is turning its attention to the southern tip of Baja California.
That’s where an area of disturbed weather about 1,100 miles off the coast is becoming organized.
The weather service says conditions are favorable for the system to become a tropical depression over the next couple of days as it moves west or west-northwest at about 15 mph.
The weather service says there is a medium chance — 30 to 50 percent — of the system becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours.
