Lifeguards busy with high surf

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu Lifeguards made nearly 300 preventive actions at Waikiki and Ala Moana beaches today during the high surf hitting south shores.

At Waikiki more than 200 preventive actions were issued by lifeguards, 17 assists and three rescues were made, said Bryan Cheplic, city Emergency Medical Services Department spokesman. A preventive action is a verbal warning of dangerous surf conditions.
At Ala Moana 90 protective actions were made, Cheplic said.
The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory through 6 p.m. Monday. Surf is expected to be 6 feet to 8 feet along all south facing shores of all islands into Monday. Surf will lower by Monday afternoon, the weather service says.
