Call to ban shark-feeding tours approved by board
The Hawai'i Kai Neighborhood Board has approved a resolution calling for a statewide ban on shark-feeding tour operations.
Tuesday's vote was 11-2, board chairman Greg Knudsen said.
The resolution came in response to a proposal for a shark-feeding tour operation off Maunalua Bay.
The proposal was dropped after public outcry against the business.
The resolution says such operations "attract predatory sharks into ... coastal waters (and) increase safety risks to human activities in those waters."
The board urges the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, the Coast Guard and other federal enforcement agencies to enforce state laws prohibiting the feeding of sharks in Hawai'i waters.
