A measure heading for legislative passage prohibits Hawaiian lands from being sold unless two-thirds of state lawmakers approve.
The bill received a unanimous vote in its conference committee Thursday and likely will get approval from the full House and Senate.
The legislation is a response to the U.S. Supreme Court case over whether the state of Hawaii had the right to sell former Hawaiian monarchy lands. The court ruled that the government's apology for the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom didn't strip the state of its land rights.
The bill falls short of an earlier proposal that sought a five-year moratorium on all sales of ceded lands.
