First Friday reflects May Day traditions
The monthly First Friday celebration of the arts in Nu'uanu this week will have a Hawaiiana theme in honor of the fact that Friday is May Day, Lei Day.
Among those participating in the Mendonca Building Courtyard, 1126 Smith St.:
• Former surf champion Lynne Boyer, now a plein-air and studio painter who specializes in oils.
• Big Island woodturner Syd Vierra, the only artist in Hawai'i now making translucent dyed wood bowls.
• Heather Titus, a professional photographer for 20 years known for cofee table books entwining photography with Hawaiian poetry and proverbs.
• Barbara Eberhart, artist and teacher, displaying paintings, panel screens and cards of Hawaiian flowers.
• Conservationist and educator John Johnson, a freedive photographer.
• Tina Noelani Young, who makes jams and jellies from local fruits.
Fred Gayagas will entertain and Kate Wagner's Starpoint Cafe will sell box lunches.
Enter into the Chinatown Courtyard on Smith Street at the Blue Dragon Gate or from Maunakea Street. Free and open to the public.
First Friday events take place in galleries and other venues all around the Nu'uanu area between Beretania and King Streets.
