Henry Kapono's performance at the state Capitol was carried over a public address system that used electricity generated by two photovoltaic panels to charge storage batteries and a power inverter to provide 120 volt AC power.

Volunteers from the group Kanu Hawaii, which stresses sustainability in the Islands, were at the state Capitol yesterday morning for what they called a day of service and a statement.

The volunteers performed two free services for legislators and anyone parked in the Capitol's lot.

First, they switched out incandescent light bulbs for energy-efficient ones.

Then, they checked the tire pressure of every car in the lot and left a written report.

Later in the day, the Blue Planet Foundation held its Clean Energy Rally at the state Capitol to urge legislators to adopt a "no fossil fuel" approach.

As part of the rally, entertainer Henry Kapono performed with a sound system powered entirely by the sun using photovoltaic panels.
