Kapiolani Park readied for Friday's 82nd Lei Day Celebration

Painters from the city Department of Parks and Recreation today put a fresh coat of paint on a 224-foot long panel at Kapiolani Park that will display entries from the lei contest at Friday's 82nd Lei Day Celebration.

City workers are sprucing up Kapiolani Park in preparation for Friday's 82nd Lei Day Celebration.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the bandstand.

The investiture of the royal court is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. to noon.

The always-colorful lei contest exhibition opens to the public from 12:30, following judging from 10 to noon.

Keiki are encouraged to visit Tutu's Hale from 1 to 5 p.m. to hear stories, learn a song and a hula, and get lessons in lei making and lauhala weaving.

The Royal Hawaiian Band, Kapena, Na Wahine O Ka Hula Mai Ka Puuwai, Manao Company, Na Kupuna O Koolau and Halau Hula O Hokulani are scheduled to perform.

The event is free and open to the public.
