USA Swimming set to reward its coaches

By Brian Gomez

Bob Bowman didn't receive any hardware when Michael Phelps swam into the Olympic record books with eight gold medals last summer in Beijing. Neither did Michael Lohberg when Dara Torres showed age hardly matters by winning three silvers.

Swimming's national governing body is making sure the coaches who helped propel their stars into the spotlight are being compensated properly, aided by the largest charitable contribution in the five-year history of its foundation.

Los Angeles swimming enthusiast Carolyn Dirks gave $5 million last week to the Colorado Springs-based USA Swimming Foundation, and the NGB's headquarters building at the Olympic Training Center was named Saturday in her honor.

Part of the donation from Dirks, who contributed $6.5 million to a California cancer institute in 2007, will benefit the national team coaches incentive and reward program, in which coaches are paid for top-three international finishes by their swimmers.

Current coaches and age-group coaches land bonuses after podium finishes by their swimmers in major international competitions, such as the Olympics, world championships and Pan Pacific Championships. Since 2001, the program has doled out more than $2 million.

USA Swimming executive director Chuck Wielgus said the program keeps coaches "motivated and energized. They're the system. It's incredibly important that we recognize and reward them in whatever way we can."

Springs shooters excel

OTC shooter Keith Sanderson won a gold this month in 25-meter rapid fire pistol at a World Cup event in Beijing. Also of the OTC, Matt Rawlings placed fifth in 10-meter air rifle, and Jason Turner was seventh in 50-meter free pistol.

Colorado Springs shooter Hannah Lewis won the 10-meter air pistol title at the National Junior Olympic Championships at the OTC. She was second in 25-meter sport pistol.

Mixed results in judo

OTC judo player Katie Sell claimed a gold this month at the Senior National Championships in San Diego. Also representing the OTC, Christal Ransom was second; Samantha Bleier, Paola Genao-Butler and Jacob Larsen were third; and Pauline Macias, Ryan Reser, Julio Rodriguez and Jillian Roman were fifth. In the masters category, OTC resident Angela Marino won two titles. OTC resident Myles Porter triumphed in the visually impaired division.
