Buffanblu girls capture ILH water polo title

Punahou's players have the green light to go, and the team defense to stop opponents.

Last night, Shayna Price scored five goals, Brailey Hirose-Hulbert added three and everyone contributed on defense to help Punahou beat host Kamehameha, 10-7, in the championship game of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls water polo tournament at Kalani'opu'u Swimming Pool.

"A big thing is playing team defense and helping each other out and not guarding one person at all times," Hirose-Hulbert said.

Aisha Price added two goals for the top-seeded Buffanblu (8-0), who have already clinched a state tournament berth. Punahou is the defending state champion.

Kiley Doane, Britney Garrigan and Nanea Fujiyama each scored two goals for the third-seeded Warriors (3-5), who made a push late in the game.

"The end of this game doesn't just end this game, it goes into the next time we play," Fujiyama said. "We wanted momentum, that mental edge over Punahou ... when we see them at states."

Price's third goal of the game gave the Buffanblu (8-0) the lead for good at 4-3 with 3:05 left in the second quarter. Aisha Price then scored with 1:40 left after her attempt went off the right post of the goal, back at her, and she scored on the rebound to make it 5-3.

Punahou extended its lead to 7-3 in the third quarter after goals by Hirose-Hulbert and Shayna Price. After Doane scored for Kamehameha with 4:19 left, both Price sisters scored to make it 9-4 at the end of the third quarter.

"They epitomize our team philosophy, which is a relentless attack," Punahou coach Ken Smith said. "Every one has the green light to attack, they always keep attacking. The more you attack, the more opportunities you create for yourself and your teammates."

Fujiyama's shot that skipped on the water and into the rightside of the goal cut the deficit to 9-5 with 6:39 left in the fourth, and Garrigan scored from the right corner to help the Warriors close to 9-6 with less than five minutes remaining.

Hirose-Hulbert scored with 3:35 left to make it 10-6, and the Warriors couldn't convert on their next three possessions. Kamehameha's Kelia Parilla scored with 18 seconds left for the game's final margin.

In the tournament's third-place game, second-seeded 'Iolani defeated fourth-seeded Pac-Five, 10-5.

Elyse Shimomura scored four goals for 'Iolani (4-4). Paige Tsuruda had two goals in the loss. There'll be a playoff Tuesday for the league's second state berth between Kamehameha and 'Iolani at 6 p.m. at Punahou.

"I can't be more excited about it," said Fujiyama, a senior. "My freshman year we made it to states and that was an experience I'll never forget. I want that again. I want that again for the underclassmen on our team, that's an experience you can't get anywhere."

With no games next week, Hirose-Hulbert said her team will need to hone their skills before states.

"Offensively we're strong in every part of the pool, defensively we really try to shut teams down," Hirose-Hulbert said. "It's really emancipating ourselves ... stepping out of our comfort zone and throwing everything we have at other teams."
