T-shirts clog pipe and cause Kalihi sewer spill

Advertiser Staff

T-shirts clogged a pipe and caused more than 1,000 gallons of sewage to overflow from a manhole in Kalihi this morning.

Crews from the city's Department of Environmental Services were notified at 7:57 a.m. and had the area secured by 8:54 a.m.

The overflow was at 1709 Fernandez Street across from the YMCA. T-shirts clogged an 8-inch clay pipe causing a 1,425 gallon overflow. An estimated 300 gallons were contained but 1,125 gallons reached a storm drain that leads to Kalihi Stream, which empties into Keehi Lagoon.

The crew said only about 600 gallons reached the stream; the rest dissipated in thick vegetation.

The state Department of Health was notified and warning signs are posted, while sampling and monitoring are forthcoming.
