No. 1 Pearl City roll into OIA semis

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

PEARL CITY — Nothing, not even the loss of two top starters, seems to be standing in Pearl City's way on its march toward a third straight O'ahu Interscholastic Association baseball championship.

Kalani tried but eventually succumbed, 11-0, yesterday in an OIA Red Conference quarterfinal at Pearl City shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule.

The Red West Division champ Chargers — ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media — improved to 13-0 and will face East No. 2 seed Moanalua in today's 3:30 p.m. semifinal at Pearl City.

Pearl City coach Gary Nakamoto said junior right-hander Kahana Neal, the winning pitcher in last year's OIA title game, is expected to start today after being academically cleared late yesterday afternoon. The Chargers already have been playing without 2008 Advertiser All-State third baseman Bryson Namba, who is "off the team," Nakamoto said while declining comment on the reason.

But the Chargers don't seem affected much on the field, as they broke out for four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning yesterday and added seven runs in the fifth, with Carlton Tanabe's one-out, three-run homer abruptly ending the game.

"They deserve to be No. 1, and we knew that coming in," Falcons coach Shannon Hirai said. "We thought we would have a chance with (starter) Dillon (Matsuda), and we were right there with them for three innings ..."

But Bronson Oda led off the Pearl City fourth with a double down the left field line, and on Chevas Numata's sacrifice bunt toward third base, the throw to first went into right field allowing Oda to score. The next batter, Micah Turrell, was hit by a pitch, and one out later Terry Ryan slammed a two-run triple to right field.

After a walk, Kyle Kobayashi stroked a single to right to bring home Ryan and make it 4-0.

"We didn't get any hits in the first three innings, but all we needed was that little bunt to open the door for us," Nakamoto said. "I guess we gotta create something like that for the bats to come out all of a sudden."

The Chargers built on the lead in the fifth, helped by five walks, two wild pitches and two passed balls.

Turrell cashed in with a two-run single to left and Tanabe ended it with his blast over the left-field fence.

Kawika Pruett pitched a five-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks for Pearl City.
