BOSTON — Joan Benoit Samuelson was back on the Boston Marathon course, running fourth in a new 5K on the day before the 113th edition of the traditional race.
The 51-year-old Olympic gold medalist finished the 3.1-mile race in 17 minutes, 41.9 seconds — six seconds behind winner Maria Varela. Jarrod Shoemaker won the men's race.
In other events scheduled Sunday to extend marathon day into the weekend, Olympian and U.S. indoor champion Anna Willard outkicked Olympic bronze medalist Shalane Flanagan to win the Boston Athletic Association Invitational Mile.
Darren Brown, who with his father Barry Brown became the first father and son to each run faster than 4-minute miles, won the men's mile.
